Perfect Pairings: Hot Drinks to Enjoy with Your Winter BBQ

Winter BBQs call for hearty dishes, and, what better way to make the most of a meal than paired with a warm beverage. A cosy hot drink adds warmth to chilly evenings and accompanies the smoky, savoury flavours of the BBQ. From mulled ciders to spiced teas, here are some of our favourite hot drinks to enjoy with your winter BBQ.

  1. Hot Mulled Cider

Nothing says winter like a mug of hot mulled cider. With its warming spices—think cinnamon, cloves, and star anise—mulled cider is a natural partner for grilled meats. The apple base adds a hint of sweetness that complements rich BBQ dishes like smoked sausages or a hearty pork shoulder.

How to make it:
Heat apple cider with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and a dash of nutmeg. Simmer for 10-15 minutes to blend the flavours, then serve in mugs or coffee cups. Add a splash of spiced rum if you fancy something extra!

  1. Classic Mulled Wine

Mulled wine is another favourite for these cold winter evenings. It has the richness to stand up to the bold flavours of BBQ brisket or spiced ribs, and it’s easy to make in large batches to share with friends and family.

How to make it:
Gently heat red wine with a few tablespoons of sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange slices, and a bit of star anise. Simmer it on low (but be sure not to let it boil!) until fragrant. For something different, add a splash of brandy or a slice of ginger.

  1. Irish Coffee

if you're not a huge Cider or Wine fan, Irish coffee is another fantastic choice. The mix of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and a touch of sugar pairs perfectly with savoury BBQ dishes. If you want to, add a creamy topping to make it more of a delight on chilly evenings.

How to make it:
Brew a strong cup of coffee, then add a measure of Irish whiskey and a teaspoon of brown sugar. Stir to combine, then top with lightly whipped cream for a smooth, warming finish. This is especially good with grilled steaks or loaded baked potatoes.

  1. Hot Chocolate

For something sweet and comforting, a hot chocolate cannot be beaten. This rich, creamy drink is perfect for kids and adults alike. Coming in a mixture of different flavours, from plain chocolate to pumpkin spiced, there's a flavour for everyone to enjoy.

How to make it:
Melt chocolate of your choice in a saucepan with milk. For an extra bit of taste, add a sprinkle of cinnamon and a for extra warmth, add a pinch of chilli powder. Stir until smooth, then pour into mugs. For adults wanting an extra kick, a splash of spiced rum or bourbon. Top with marshmallows or whipped cream to serve.

  1. Chai Latte

For a non-alcoholic option that’s full of warmth and flavour, a chai latte is a top choice. The aromatic spices in chai, like cardamom, ginger, and cloves, add a wonderful depth of flavour.

How to make it:
Brew a strong cup of black tea with chai spices (or use a pre-made chai blend). Heat up some milk, then combine it with the tea and a bit of honey for sweetness. Stir well, and if you'd like that festive taste, add a sprinkle of cinnamon on top before serving.

  1. Honey and Ginger Tea

For a lighter and more refreshing option, a honey and ginger tea is just the drink. The honey adds just the right amount of sweetness whilst the zing of the ginger gives it a bit of a kick.
